1. What are the Board's new requirements for supervisors?

The Board's supervisor requirements are detailed in their document Guidelines for Supervisors and Supervisory Training Provider available on the website:

www.psychologyboard.gov.au/Standards-and-Guidelines/Codes-Guidelines-Policies.aspx

The Guidelines state that approval as a supervisor is subject to renewal every five years (or by June 2018 if you were approved at any time prior to July 2013).  One of the requirements for renewal is completion of an update workshop.  You can do this by completing an initial supervision training again or by completing a Board-approved Master Class in supervision.

Completion of our Master Classes Feedback and Reflective Practice would meet this requirement.  Other providers also offer Master Classes that meet the Board's requirements (see Board's website for info on other providers).  You can attend more than one Master Class if you wish; they contribute to active Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours.

2. I'm not an approved supervisor yet - how do I find training to gain approval?

We no longer provide supervision workshops for initial approval as a supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia.  You can find contact details for providers of such workshops on the Board's website: www.psychologyboard.gov.au/Registration/Supervision/Supervisor-training.aspx

3. What is the content of the Feedback and Reflective Practice Master Class?

This one or two day workshop provides theory and skills training (with a live demonstration and many opportunities for practice) in:

  • Incorporating reflective practice into evidence-based practice

  • Providing effective feedback

  • Creating safe supervisory spaces (including reflective space)

  • Adopting a mindful approach in supervision

  • Conducting reflective supervision sessions

  • Eliciting and responding to feedback from the practitioner

  • Developing the practitioner's self-assessment and reflection skills

  • Attendance certificate (for CPD points and for renewal of supervisor status)

5. Do I need to do any preparation?

Yes.

  1. We suggest that you read the documents Supermouse: Structure Supervision and Supervision Contracts on setting up a safe supervisory relationship.

  2. A Notable Incident is an experience that's noteworthy for learning and is written up in preparation for supervision.  The practice session during the workshop involves supervision around a Notable Incident.  Participants will work in groups of 2 or 3, thus not everyone needs to present an incident.  However, it can be a useful exercise to prepare one, even if you decide at the time that you don't want to present it.  Instructions for writing the Notable Incident (max 1 page) click here.  It's optional to prepare one and optional to present it if you do prepare it.

6. What's in the test and what if I fail it?

The Board requires a written assessment of your theory and skills knowledge.  The test comprises 8 questions on material that's been thoroughly covered during the workshop.  It takes 15 - 30 minutes to complete.  It's open book and self-assessed using supplied scoring criteria.  All the psychologists who have done the test so far have gained very high scores.  We're confident you'll pass if you actively participate in the workshop.

If you don't pass, then you can still count the CPD hours but you'll need to complete another supervision workshop (the same one or a different one) to meet the requirements for renewal of supervisor status.
